Ian Wilkinson is an attorney-at-law, and has served as President of the Jamaica Bar Association, and Chairman of Magnificent Chess Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to leverage the art of teaching and learning chess to help build better communities in Jamaica, and it has introduced chess in scores of schools across Jamaica.

Wilkinson has publicly stated that "chess is about thinking, planning ahead, strategising, and it's exciting; so everybody should learn chess".

He started playing chess in 1999 then moved up to the position of being the Jamaican Captain at both the 2002 Chess Olympiad in Bled, Slovenia, and the 2004 Chess Olympiad in Calvia, Spain, and chef de mission for the 39th Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. He later became President of the Jamaica Chess Federation from 2003 to 2011.

He was awarded the Jamaica Chess Federation’s Chess Journalist of the Year award for 2002, and award for Best Chess Analyst in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

He has written two books on about the game of chess. The first is entitled "Magnificence In Bled: The 35th Chess Olympiad", and is a commentary on the 35th Chess Olympiad. His second book on chess is "Excitement Galore: Chess In All Its Glory", and presents a very simple but also very entertaining tutorial on how to play the game of chess.
